Perfect Pairs Blackjack
Perfect Pairs is a blackjack side bet that wins when your first two cards are a pair. Here’s how it works, what each pair pays, and the exact odds of hitting one.
How the Perfect Pairs side bet works
- Before the deal, place a bet on the PP box next to your main bet. You need a main bet to play the side bet.
- When your first two cards are dealt, the side bet is settled straight away.
- If they’re a pair, you win. The type of pair decides the payout. If they’re not a pair, the side bet loses.
- The rest of the hand plays out as normal blackjack. Hitting, standing or splitting doesn’t change the side bet.
Perfect Pairs payouts
There are three kinds of pair, from most common to rarest:
| Pair | What it means | Example | Pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mixed pair | Same rank, one red and one black | 8♥8♠ | 5:1 |
| Coloured pair | Same rank and colour, different suits | 8♥8♦ | 10:1 |
| Perfect pair | Identical cards: same rank and suit | 8♥8♥ | 30:1 |
A perfect pair is only possible because blackjack is dealt from a shoe of several decks. Perfect Pair Blackjack uses six.
Perfect Pairs odds (6 decks)
Once your first card is dealt, 311 cards remain in a six-deck shoe. Of those, 5 are an exact copy of your card, 6 match its rank and colour in the other suit, and 12 match its rank in the other colour. That gives these exact odds:
| Result | Chance | About 1 in | Pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perfect pair | 1.61% | 62 | 30:1 |
| Coloured pair | 1.93% | 52 | 10:1 |
| Mixed pair | 3.86% | 26 | 5:1 |
| Any pair | 7.40% | 13.5 | |
| No pair (bet loses) | 92.60% |
House edge
On the 30:1 / 10:1 / 5:1 paytable above, the Perfect Pairs bet on its own has a house edge of 5.79%. For every 100 chips bet, you’d expect to get back about 94 over the long run. Casinos use several paytables. The common 25:1 / 12:1 / 6:1 table works out at 6.11% with six decks.
The Lucky Pair changes the maths. In Perfect Pair Blackjack, a perfect pair that matches the round’s Lucky Pair rank pays an extra 500:1. That happens on about 1 in 809 Perfect Pairs bets, and it adds so much that the side bet returns more than it costs over time. That only works because this is a free play-money game. You won’t find it at a real casino.
The Lucky Pair jackpot and streak bonus
Every round, Perfect Pair Blackjack draws a Lucky Pair rank, shown on the table above your cards. If you have a Perfect Pairs bet on and land a perfect pair in that rank, you win the normal 30:1 plus a 500:1 jackpot.
Hit perfect pairs on back-to-back rounds and you also earn a streak bonus: 50 chips for two in a row, then another 50 for each round you keep it going.
Perfect Pairs tips
- It’s a side bet, not a strategy. Nothing you do changes your chance of a pair. It’s pure luck on the first two cards.
- Keep it small. Keep side bets small compared with your main bet. The Perfect Pairs bet loses more than 9 times in 10.
- Splitting is separate. If you’re dealt a pair, the side bet has already paid. Whether to split is a main-game decision, so check the basic strategy chart.
Perfect Pairs FAQ
What is a perfect pair in blackjack?
A perfect pair is when your first two cards are identical: the same rank and the same suit, such as two 8 of hearts. It is the top hand in the Perfect Pairs side bet and pays 30:1 in Perfect Pair Blackjack.
What are the odds of getting a perfect pair?
With a six-deck shoe, the chance of a perfect pair is 5 in 311, about 1.61%, or roughly 1 in 62 hands. The chance of any pair (mixed, coloured or perfect) is about 7.4%.
Is the Perfect Pairs side bet worth it?
In a real casino it is a side bet with a house edge of about 4–6% depending on the paytable, higher than the main blackjack game. In Perfect Pair Blackjack you play with free chips, and the Lucky Pair jackpot makes the bet unusually generous.
Does splitting affect the Perfect Pairs bet?
No. The Perfect Pairs bet is settled on your first two cards as soon as they are dealt. Splitting, hitting or losing the main hand afterwards does not change it.
